Aide to former President Jerry Rawlings, Kofi Adams, has fended off criticisms that the former first couple is power drunk, arguing the former first lady is more than qualified to be Ghana's president. He said for 28 years, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings has worked tirelessly to better the lot of the underprivileged in the country and that the experience garnered in this journey makes the former First Lady stand tall amongst all the people whose names have so far come up as possible successors to President J.E.A. Mills. “We have presidents across the world some of whom have not even half of the percentage of experience Nana Konadu has [accumulated] in the last 28 years that she has been actively involved in the political activities of this country,” he told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah Monday. Mr Kofi Adams was reacting to media reports that Mr and Mrs Rawlings are preparing the grounds for the former First Lady to contest the presidential slot of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the 2012 general elections. Delegates from the Ashanti Region to this year's commemoration of the June 4 Uprising marked in Tamale, hoisted a big banner which read, "Movement for Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings: 2012 President." At the event, Mr Rawlings characteristically lashed out at what he called the incompetence of the Mills-led administration and at a point called the president a 'konongo kaya', - one who would not do the job but would not allow others to do it. Such utterances, media publications allege, are to undermine the president and incite the grassroots supporters against the president in furtherance of the aspirations of Mrs Rawlings. But kofi Adams believes the concerns are baseless. While noting that Mrs Rawlings has herself not publicly declared any interest in the presidency, he said he will not, as a person, stop anybody who will want to indicate his or her support for Nana Konadu to be the flag-bearer of the NDC. Touting the credentials of the President of the 31st December Women’s Movement, Kofi Adams, who is also a Deputy General Secretary of the ruling party, said “…Nana Konadu always does things that she believes strongly, will bring about progress to whichever organization she so represents.” Mr Adams denied suggestions that a grand movement is being formed across the 10 regions to canvass for votes for Mrs Rawlings but admitted there is a strong, quiet agitation for her to be considered for the flag-bearer of the NDC for 2012. He claimed he had been inundated with text messages from influential members of the ruling party who are rooting for Mrs Rawlings. Asked why is the subject of a flag-bearer for 2012 in the NDC being discussed when there is a sitting president - Mills - who has declared his intention to contest the 2012 election, Mr Adams said the NDC was a proactive political organisation and will adopt strategies that will enable it retain power to prosecute its agenda. Describing the NDC as the best political party in Ghana, he said if retaining the sitting president as the flag-bearer of the party is what will win the 2012 elections for the party, - so be it.
