Leaders of public workers say government communicators ridiculed a 2014 demonstration as having no impact and so they are determined to make sure this year’s protest bites hard.

Public workers in the Ashanti region say they are ready to demonstrate again on Thursday after recording impressive participation in Wednesday’s demonstration over economic hardships.

“Everybody is poised....we are not going to break the chain...today we will let them feel it” Chairman of the Kumasi Council of Labour Bernard Kofi Asare vowed.

The TUC organised a nationwide demonstration in all the regional capitals. The umbrella body of workers’ union say increases in fuel prices and utility tariffs are unbearable.

Wednesday’s demonstration in Kumasi was ‘very impressive’, Joy News’ Erastus Asare Donkor reported . Teacher unions, health workers union, agricultural workers union and officials in the judiciary poured onto the streets with chants of ‘we no go gree’ to wit ‘we won’t agree’.

The workers marched through the streets in Adum and ended at the Cultural Center.

“I was not anticipating that the whole Kumasi will leave everything and come” Mr. Kofi Asare confessed.

Encouraged by the tempo of Wednesday’s anti-government protest, leaders of various labour unions say they are waiting for a positive response from leaders in Accra to go ahead with their plans on Thursday.

According to a TUC roadmap, public workers are to demonstrate today and go on strike Thursday and Friday.

But instead of staying home, public workers in the Ashanti regional capital want another chance to hit the streets.

The Ashanti region is the strongest region of opposition against government and a stronghold of the opposition NPP.

But the National Executive of TUC is appealing for calm. They would rather the workers wait for the outcome of a meeting with government on Thursday before they can embark on the strike action.
