The Ghana Health Service has put in new guidelines to avoid any outbreak of cholera and a spread of it should it occur in any part of the country.

In 2014, more than 400 people died with over eight thousand persons getting infected with cholera, mostly in the capital Accra.

At a launch of the new guidelines in Accra on Thursday, head of cholera prevention at the Service, Dr. Emmanuel Dzotsi, outlined measures needed to be adhered to by those affected, families of those infected, health facilities and workers.

“These new standard operating procedures mandates everybody to implement the cholera interventions pre, during and post outbreak phase.

“Meaning throughout the year we are working on cholera so we will not have the disease come in,” he added.

He said people who come into contact with patients will be strictly monitored to ensure that the disease does not spread in case any more cases should be recorded.

Deputy Director at the Service, Dr.Gloria Quansah Asare also launched a new quarterly newsletter for the Ghana Health Service.

Dr. Quansah Asare explained the newsletter will provide readers with health information as well as maintain regular contact with patients.

“It is the aim of the Ghana health Service to have its own corporate newsletter to give unadulterated and timely information to the public.”

The maiden edition of the newsletter will provide information about Ebola and choler and how they can be prevented.

Stories will be collected from across the country to give the newsletter a regional balance.
