Stranded Ghana fans may just see their dream of going to South Africa materialize despite government directive for them to go home.
Deputy Sports Minister Nii Nortey Dua had only Monday made it palpably clear that the government had exhausted its list of sponsorship to teeming fans wishing to go to South Africa to support the Black Stars in the ongoing World Cup.
He had said except the fans had alternative means to go to South Africa, they had no business staying at the El-Wak Sports Stadium at the mercy of the weather, and harmful mosquito bites because government’s sponsorship funds was exhausted.
Barely a day after the directive, Deputy Local Government Minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has told Joy FM’s Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah the stranded fans may just go to South Africa.
According to him, some private individuals on “humanitarian grounds” were frantically making efforts to fly the 370 stranded fans who have been staying at the EL-Wak sports stadium for several days.
“Government has made it very clear that it is not going to expend any further resources on this,” he said, adding private individuals who have taken cognisance of the difficulties of the fans have agreed to assist.
“People travel all the way to the place expectant; they are frustrated; It will be very difficult to look at their faces and tell them to go home,” he said.
