The Central Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed its condolence to the victims of last Sunday's flood which swept some parts of the country. The party expressed the condolence to relatives of people who died after visiting the affected communities with President John Atta Mills and the Regional Minister, Mrs Ama Benyiwa Doe. It also sympathised with people who lost their property. A statement signed by Mr Kow Anyanful, Regional Secretary, said "We sympathise with you in this great loss of lives and property and wish to assure you of our support in your distress." The party appealed to Ghanaians to observe regulations on building to avoid putting up structures on water ways. "Each and everyone must be a protector of the environment by preventing people from abusing the drainage system especially through dumping of refuse into gutters," the statement said. The statement cautioned drivers against underrating water on roads as a result of rivers overflowing their banks, saying the accident in which some people got drowned could have been avoided if the drivers had listened to the passengers not to pass through the water. It said the disaster was an eye opener for the people, especially politicians, who are against demolishing of structures built on waterways to allow free flow of water. It said the demolishing exercise was in the interest of the people and advised politicians not to use it to score undeserved marks.Source: GNA
