Police in Tamale have halted a planned demonstration by some sympathizers of the opposition New Patriotic Party. The sympathizers had planned to go on a march to protest the latest arrest of three members of the Abudu royal family. The three have been picked up to assist in investigations into the murder of Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani. But the police say the demonstration cannot come off because Vice President John Mahama is visiting Tamale on Saturday. But spokesperson for NPP sympathizers, Baj Alim says they are unhappy with the police directive, arguing that their demonstration would have posed no threat to the Vice-President.“If the Vice-President is coming, it shouldn’t be a guarantee for the security agency to put it as an excuse that the NPP sympathizers shouldn’t come out to demonstrate and put their displeasures to the general public.”He told Joy News they have, however, decided to reschedule the demonstration.Northern Regional police PRO Inspector Isaac Tetteh told Joy News that all activities would have to be put on hold as security personnel have been detailed to attend to the Vice President. Moreover, he said police have not been formally informed of the planned demonstration.Vice President Mahama is in Tamale to launch the start of the cotton farming season. His aide John Jinapor says the move is to serve as a demonstration of government’s commitment to boosting the agric industry.Story by Myjoyonline.com/Joy News
