The Propaganda Secretary of the National Democratic Congress has deplored what he says is the interference of the opposition New Patriotic Party in the work of the security apparatus in the country.Richard Quashigah was reacting to a press conference by the Minority in Parliament which called for the release of a man believed to be a stanch member of the NPP from police custody. The NDC Propaganda Secretary said such calls have the potential to encourage criminals.Bashiru Mohammed was picked up by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) on Sunday upon arrival from South Africa where he had gone to cheer on the Black Stars. While the suspect is yet to be charged, the Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu at the press conference said it is acceptable for the NPP supporter to be held for more than 48 hours, and called for his immediate release. But speaking to Joy News’ Evans Mensah on Wednesday, the NDC Propaganda Secretary said the posture of the biggest opposition party emboldens criminality.“I think that the reaction of the NPP largely emboldens criminality in this country. A lot of criminals are getting bolder by the day because they know too well that if they commit any crime what they need to do is to associate themselves with the NPP and the NPP leadership will come to their support. I think that it is most unfortunate,” he said.Mr Quashigah opined that beyond threatening the work of the security apparatus, the recent calls by the NPP for the release of criminal suspects belonging to the party is “debasing this whole political thing,” describing them as “so unfortunate, so frivolous.”While the police prepare charges to be preferred against Bashiru, the NDC Propaganda Secretary said the opposition party should rather think of finding a lawyer for their member.Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
