President John Evans Atta Mills is confident the Black Stars of Ghana will overcome their Uruguayan counterparts as they face-off Friday evening for a semi-final ticket at the World Cup.
The prayerful Mills said the world cannot forget the shining Black Stars, Africa’s only surviving candidates and he prays they make it to the semi-finals.
“I pray they go to the semi-final...Last year it was the Black Satellites, this year it will be the Black Stars,” he said in anticipation of the Black Stars emulating their junior teammates who conquered the world at the youth level and won Africa’s first ever gold at the stage.
Reports from the Stars camp speak of high morale among the players, who say they are determined to write history as the first from the continent to make a semi-final berth. Cameroon (1990) and Senegal (2002) have both landed the quarter final berth but failed to advance.
Apart from Andre Dede Ayew, whose mercurial performance at the World Cup has so endeared him to all, including a previously sceptical few, and stalwart defender Jonathan Mensah, (both on accumulated yellow cards), the team remains intact.
Ghana Football Association President, Kwesi Nyantakyi is counting on the support of the entire continent as the Black Stars seek to make the continent proud.
He is quoted by the BBC as saying; "We are supported by the whole of Africa. In Africa, we are one person, we have a common objective and that is why we support one another…We know we are not alone. We are trying to pursue the African cause - we will do our best."
And that is the exact word on the lips of Ghanaians back home, hopeful the Stars will shine, once again.
