The families of two young men shot and killed at a drinking spot in Accra, two years ago, are accusing the police and Attorney General’s Department of allowing the suspect to walk free.
Sadam Abdulai, 21, was shot dead on his motorbike outside a drinking spot at Asylum Down while William Kwadwo Sarpong, 33, was shot dead while he was in the bar drinking with a friend.
Contrary to early reports that the Police exchanged gunfire with robbers resulting in the deaths, police investigations say both persons were allegedly shot and killed by the owner of the drinking spot Akoto Osei Appiah.
Sources at the Police Headquarters revealed that the Attorney-General last year advised that Appiah should be charged with murder in respect of Sadam Abdulai and manslaughter in respect of the death of William Kwadwo Sarpong.
But two years after the incident, the State is yet to begin the process to prosecute Appiah.
Anabel Akwetey, mother to her only son, Sarpong, was shattered when her family broke the story of her son’s murder Saturday night February 22, 2014.
Abdulai's father Hid, 57, said he first heard about his son’s killing from people who saw his dead body on the internet.
He said one of his sons, Abdul Majid, who had heard about his brother’s death who went to the scene was beaten and locked up by the Police. The Police claimed Majid was an accomplice in the robbery attempt.
Initial reports said Sadam and his friend who were on the motorbike had arrived at the drinking spot and started shooting indiscriminately, killing William.
The report said somebody returned fire and killed Sadam.
Some friends of Abdulai accused the Police of shooting him and went on a rampage threatening to attack the Police. Police investigations, however, revealed that the two were shot and killed by the owner of the drinking spot, Akoto Osei Appiah.
Appiah was arrested and granted bail. William’s mother told Joy News’ Manasseh Azure that Appiah informed her that Sarpong had been shot by someone else.
Joy News sources within the Police Service say a bill of indictment is yet to be served on the suspect after which he can be arrested for the trial to start.
It is not clear when this will happen, but parents of the two young men say justice for their innocent children is being unduly delayed.
