Residents of Atsivikope in the Kadjebi District of the Volta Region now have a functional borehole following a Joy News report on their plight.

A World Bank funded borehole project in the community which was started in 2012 by the District Assembly had stalled because funding had run out.

This forced residents to continue drinking from a polluted stream.

In Joy News’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo who was in the community for our documentary “Jungle Poor” last year reported the residents drink from a stream. The stream water was brownish and contains several impurities including sticks.

Pupils complained they had to walk for up to 30 minutes and back to fetch water from the dirty stream.

“We are so tired before we walk from here to our house before we bath and go to school,” a JHS pupil told Joy News.

Now, there is some relief. Assembly member for the area Abdul Rhaman Ibrahim tells Joy news work on the borehole has been completed following the Joy news report.

 “You know when you came the borehole was already dug, only fixing was the problem. So, your story that you carried through Joy FM alerted the district assembly, and I was invited and I gave them details…..so, DCE promised that he will make sure that since the story is on net, he will make sure his people go there to fix it, and truly too, it’s been fixed,” he said.
