Tomorrow is the deciding day for New Patriotic Party delegates across the country to cast their votes to elect the party's flag bearer, ahead of the 2012 presidential election. The campaigns mounted by the five aspiring candidates for the past several months have been hectic and eventful though sometimes 'nasty' but the over 100,000 delegates from all the 230 constituencies will finally have the opportunity to "make their choice tomorrow. Even though it is public knowledge that only the party's accredited delegates are billed to vote, for the past few days, the media, especially local online media have come up with results of public polls they have supposedly conducted on the outcome of the elections. The polls had been premised on the assumption that if the whole of Ghana Were voting on Saturday, there will be no one-touch, winner and it would go into a run-off, between the two front-runners- Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and Alan Kyerematen. If that happens, Nana Akufo-Addo will find himself between a rock and a hard place since the so called minority candidates - lssac Osei, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, and John Kwabena Kodua- have, since the campaign began, been seen working together, to the disadvantage of Nana Addo. Indeed a few weeks ago, at a press conference by representatives of the four other aspiring candidates; it was amply clear that they were in one corner to the exclusion of the party's 2008 flag-bearer. It will therefore: not be a surprise if they should come together to the event of a run-off tomorrow to undo him in favour of Mr Kyerematen. Saturday's congress will be historic for, at least one reason; for the first time in the political history of Ghana and Africa, party delegates in 230 constituencies across one country will be voting; as if it were a national multi-party election, to select its presidential-candidate for a general election. As has been the tradition of the party tomorrow's congress will be conducted by the Electoral commission in all the constituencies, except Ablekuma North and Ablekuma South, where certain outstanding issues are yet to be resolved. Officials of the EC are expected to collate and give the final tally of votes obtained by each candidate. Each constituency shall represent a unit polling area and polling centre whilst the National Council of Elders, the National Executive-Council, past national officers and representatives of the party’s external branches will all vote at the national headquarters in Accra. Voting is expected to begin at all polling centres at 8:00 am and close at 3:00 pm with counting following immediately. Provision has been made for the Electoral Commission to declare the results at the Efua Sutherland Children's Park near the National Theatre in Accra. In the event of an outright win, the winning candidate will then be declared by the National Chairman of the party. The party has completed security arrangements and is in discussions with the various security agencies to ensure that adequate protection is provided during the entire congress.
