Vice-president Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah Arthur has commissioned 64 new Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in the Upper West region.
The CHPS compounds funded by the people of Japan and the government of Ghana cost $8.5 million.
Commissioning the compounds at Loho in the Nadowli District, Mr. Arthur said government is committed to bringing basic health care to the doorstep of the Ghanaian especially those in underserved remote communities.
He said the CHPS policy will guide health programming and investment at the community level and several initiatives has been put in place to ensure the policy works.
“Only this month the government has committed resources to the construction of an additional 1000 CHPS compound in underserved communities nationwide,” said Mr. Arthur.
Vice-president Arthur said government in collaboration with stakeholders such as the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), UK Department for International Development (DFID), Korean Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) have already constructed CHPS compounds to cover 1400 CHPS zones in underserved communities.
Minister of Health, Alex Segbefia rolled out the plans of his ministry and that of development partners to construct more CHPS compounds across the country.
Mr. Segbefia said KOFIH is in the Volta region providing support to build some compounds and the USAID plans to build 55 compounds and renovate 155 in the Volta and Northern regions with the DFID also committed to building 10 compounds.
He revealed that both President Mahama and vice-president, Amissah Arthur have set aside part of their salaries to see the CHPS programs succeed.
Upper West regional minister, Amin Amidu Sulemani stated that with the construction of several CHPS Compound in the region has improved health care delivery in the region.
Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Kaoru Yoshimura stated the people of Japan were happy to be part of the success story of CHPS compounds in Ghana.
“It is our great pleasure to contribute to inclusive and sustainable health system in Ghana,” said Ambassador Yoshimura.
