The unprofessional treatment of a national security directive by Ghana Immigration Service is to blame for terror scare and not the media, Kweku Baako has said.

A security Intel memo meant for heads of security agencies in Ghana dated April 9, 2016, which indicated a terrorist threat is real, was leaked and circulated on social media.

The document revealed that a Malian terrorist said to be the brain behind an attack on Grand Bassam resort in Ivory Coast, during interrogation by Ivorian security officials, allegedly confessed that there were plans to attack Ghana and Togo.

The poor handling of the document caused its leakage and create the false impression of a second terror alert, Kweku Baako argued.

President John Dramani Mahama expressed disappointment over the lack of secrecy within the security agencies.

Speaking on Multi TV’s analysis show, Newsfile, the Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper said the document was not meant for junior staff of security agencies.

He said the media cannot be faulted for reporting on the document because it actually circulated on social media before traditional media houses reported it.

There were attempts by some people on social media to link the leaked document to a prophecy by popular Nigerian prophet, T.B Joshua to vindicate him.

But Kweku Baako believes the attempts were unfortunate and crude.

"There is no basis for that because as it's been put, who didn’t know before the prophecy that based on intelligence estimate on how the terrorism scare is going, we could be a target?” he quizzed.

The veteran journalist said prophesies and the labeling of the least security issue as a terror alert are distractions that are disarming Ghana in terms of averting a possible terror attack.

“We don’t forge the appropriate level of community security consciousness that could help security services to deal with this menace because we bring in distractions, we pollute the actual concept and this whole prophetic thing and the attempt to link it to the terror alert, to try and give vindication are part of the distraction,” Mr Baako indicated.

Private Legal Practitioner, Egbert Faibille said the security agencies should have issued a disclaimer to calm public nerves after the leakage and handled the issue internally.

But Kweku Baako disagreed with Egbert Faibille’s approach and said the official who caused the problem should be fished out and punished.
