One year after he interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye West is still singing the blues.
The hip-hop superstar wrote a lengthy apology to the country queen on Twitter over the weekend, saying his actions had nothing to do with race and claiming that he's been treated like the Wicked Witch of the West.
"She had no idea what hit her," West, who rushed the stage to proclaim that Swift's Best Female Video award should have gone to Beyoncé, tweeted Saturday. "She deserves the apology more than anyone."
West, 33, insists his actions that evening had nothing to do with skin color but everything to do with taking a stand. "I watched Justin Timberlake at the Grammies loose every televised award including album of the year which the Dixie Chicks won," he wrote. "I would have ran on stage for Justin that night because Sexy Back (in my mind) was that important... that impactful to our culture. It's not about race America."
The entertainer, who has given away his own awards to other artists, adds that the VMA incident turned him into an industry outcast.
"Who's seen the play Wicked? I've seen it 4 times! Other than loving the music acting and costumes... it's my story!!!" he says. "The Wicked witch of the west basically is so convicted to tell her' truth when she does it she is outcasted by society and turned WICKED."
Now, however, West says he has "newfound humility" and would "never ever again in a million years" interrupt a fellow artist on stage.
"It is distasteful to cut people off as a general rule. What's the point of dressing tastefully if I'm going to act the complete opposite?" said West, who reveals that he wrote a song for Swift that he hopes she'll record. "I've hurt, I've bled, I've learned. I only want to do good… I want to help as many people as I can. I want to help starting with the music and ending with the smile. It starts with this... I'm sorry Taylor."
Will Swift, 20, accept his apology? Tune in to the September 12 MTV Video Music Awards, where the two are set to meet again.
