One hundred and thirty girls from deprived schools in the Northern and Brong Ahafu regions are attending an education workshop in Tamale as part of strategies by the Ghana Education Service and IBIS Ghana, an NGO to promote girl child education. The week-long programme will expose the girls to female role models in the judiciary, broadcasting and aviation industries as well as computer labs in Tamale. The participants who are drawn from schools in remote villages in the two regions will treat topics like career guidance and counselling, good quality education, preventing dropout rate amongst female pupils and sexual reproductive health amongst others. Speaking to this reporter, the program Director of IBIS Ghana, Issahaku Zakaria said the program which is the third in a series is designed to embolden the girls to meet challenges that militate against the girl child’s educational development. He said the girls will be taken to memorable places in the metropolis and meet female role models. The girls will then be expected to be role models themselves when they return to their schools. A pupil from Sawla model school, Miss Alhassan Mavis said she will be an advocate for the right of the female child and the need for parents to send their children to school.
