The Opposition New Patriotic Party is asking the government to explain to Ghanaians why the senior high school duration has been reversed to three years.
The party says no significant improvement has occurred in the school system under the Mills administration to warrant a squeeze of the high school program from four to three years.
At a news conference in Accra this morning, leading members of the party criticized the NDC government for showing a lack of commitment to the country’s education reform.
The party’s spokesperson on Education, Prof. Dominic Fobi said the four-year duration was introduced bearing in mind the about 60 percent of Basic Education Certificate Examination leavers who on a yearly basis are not able to enter Senior High School.
“Should we ignore the 60 percent of students who year-by-year perish in the system when one extra year intervention would make a lot of difference in the student’s lives?", he asked.
He said the reversal of the duration was going to create problems for the wider society because it will throw an army of unsuccessful JHS and SHS graduates onto the streets.
