The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has taken on the National Labour Commission for suggesting that its ongoing strike is illegal. UTAG members began the strike last Friday to press home their demand for review of salaries. But the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission has described their strike as illegal because both the NLC and the Education Ministry were not notified of their intended action. The position of the NLC has infuriated UTAG President at the KNUST Dr Ohene Yankyera who told Joy News the association is not under any obligation to notify the Commission before embarking on a strike. “We are not registered with them, we are academic institutions and academic institutions are supposed to be autonomous.” He said letters written to Minister of Finance and Econimic Planning and copied and to the Education Ministry were treated with scant regard because “they didn’t even acknowledge our letter.” Dr. Yankyera said the university teachers will not return to the classroom until their salaries are reviewed and all arrears paid. Joy News has learnt that the National Labour Commission will meet today to take a decision on the UTAG strike. Source: Joy News/Ghana
