Another boat has capsized on the Volta Lake, exactly a week after a similar incident claimed 14 lives.

The boat carrying at least 50 passengers was caught in strong winds, while it moved from Sikakra heading to Yeji, a community in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The strong winds battered the wooden vessel over into choppy waters.

All the passengers were rescued, but they lost all their belongs and monies.

None of them wore life jacket confirming a culture of weak safety practices that have become the bane of boat tragedies on the Volta Lake.

Narrating the accident, a traveller Michael told Alive FM's Daniel Tayki, he saw other boats speed past their slow vessel when a wind rose up on the lake late Sunday afternoon.

The operators abandoned any hope of docking at their intended destination, Yeji, as the wind storm forced them to stop at a nearby village.

It became difficult to navigate the boat as they closed in on the shore. The women, some carrying children, descended into shallow waters and waded over to safety.

The men tried to tie the boat loaded with properties and belongings to a tree stump. But relentless tormenting winds tore off the rope and splintered the wooden vessel into unrecoverable pieces.

Only last week Sunday, 14 bodies including six children and a pregnant woman was dragged out of the Volta lake after a boat travelling to Yeji also capsized.
