Striking polytechnic teachers are asking the government to act swiftly to avoid a closure of the polytechnics. There are fears the polytechnics will shut down as the strike hits the 21-day mark. Education Minister Alex Tettey-Enyo has allayed the fears of students, promising the government will get the teachers back to the classroom this week. But leaders of the Polytechnic Teachers Association, POTAG say a shutdown is imminent. The POTAG President, Godfred Abledu, told Joy News the teachers were expecting to be called for a meeting last Friday but that did not materialize. He said if nothing is done today, Tuesday, November 02, 2010, it would be too late to salvage the talks and prevent the polytechnics from closing down. Mr Abledu said he expected the court case instituted against POTAG by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to be withdrawn because they could not be meeting with the Education Minister, Mr Alex Tettey-Enyo, to resolve the matter “if the issue is pending at the court.” The Fair Wages Commission has invited POTAG to a meeting tomorrow after another meeting with students.
