The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is set to train security officers along the border towns to help curb child trafficking activities.
Acting Executive Secretary, Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking Secretariat at the Ministry, Victoria Natsu, said the agencies will be tasked to identify potential child traffickers.
This swift action by the Ministry follows a threat by the United State Department to cut about $500 million in private investments intended to help shore-up the dipping fortunes of the Electricity Company of Ghana.
The US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson said his country, may be compelled to cut the aid to Ghana if the government fails to secure successful prosecutions of persons involved in trafficking and child labour.
According to a Ghana Living Standards Survey, 8.7 million children from 5 to 17 are engaged in child labour with at least 50,000 of them at work in Ghana’s fishing industry with high numbers around the Lake Volta area.
Victoria Natsu, said the Ministry will begin rescuing and taking care of victims of child trafficking as well as prosecuting perpetrators.
She said new programs have been rolled out to improve prosecution rate of persons involved in trafficking by June 2017.
