A committee has been formed to start planning for the establishment of an Islamic College of Education in Koforidua, to train teachers for schools under the Islamic Education Unit.
Mr Ahmed Baba Jamal, the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, disclosed this when the Minister of Education, Mr Alex Tettey-Enyo, visited some second cycle institutions in the Koforidua Municipality, including the Islamic Senior High School (SHS), at the weekend.
Mr Baba Jamal led the Minister of Education and his entourage to the plot allocated behind the Islamic SHS for the construction of the Islamic College by the Muslim community.
He said that the Muslim community wanted to establish educational institutions for the training of teachers for their schools just as other religious bodies have their training colleges.
Mr Tettey-Enyo commended the Muslim community for taking steps to improve education but expressed worry about low enrollment at the Islamic SHS, which had only 88 students and four permanent teachers.
He called for the expansion and improvement of community schools to enable more youth acquire education.
Mr Tettey-Enyo gave the assurance that government would support all schools.
