The strike by teachers across the country will continue despite an agreement they have reached with the government. The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) started the strike to press home their demand for better salaries under the single spine salary structure. At a meeting Wednesday, the government agreed to introduce a retention premium for teachers. But General Secretary of NAGRAT, Stanislaus Nabome tells JOY News the striking teachers will not return to the classrooms until the quantum of the premium has been agreed. He said they will wait till negotiations are concluded on Friday before taking a definite decision. Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, John Nyoagbe, however told Joy News although the association has not declared a strike, it is finding it difficult to convince some members who have abandoned the classrooms to resume work. Meanwhile the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) is asking the teachers to exercise restraint as it works to address their grievances. George Smith Graham, Chief Executive Officer of the FWSC said a technical team had completed its work on the anomalies that came with teachers’ salaries for February and that the commission was also carrying out its own reconciliation which has uncovered some more anomalies that are being corrected. He said they will work with the Controller and Accountant General to ensure that the anomalies are completely cleared from the new pay policy. Source: Joy News/Ghana
