Two persons have been arrested by the Sakumono District Police Command for allegedly siphoning oil from an Airtel Cell Site at Sakumono Village near Tema.
The two suspects are 30-year-old technician, William Gbeti, and 35-year-old driver Lawrence Korkor, both residents of Lashibi and Nungua respectively. They were said to have gone to the cell site which provides service to Airtel customers and allegedly attempted to steal oil product in jerry cans.
Superintendent Alex K. Wowolo, Sakumono District Police Commander, told DAILY GUIDE that the suspects were employees of Afra- Tech Electrical Engineering Service, an electrical company contracted by Airtel to service generators at the company’s various cell sites.
He said on June 6, 2011, at about 7:30 am, the suspects were spotted by a security man siphoning oil products from the communication company’s facility at the cell site, adding that the suspects earlier arrived at the facility in their company’s Ford pick-up with registration number GR 37l7-09, pretending to have come to service a generator at the facility.
Superintendent Wowolo mentioned that the security man, who had locked the facility to buy porridge nearby, returned only to see the suspects with ten jerry cans filled with the oil products believed to have been siphoned from the cell site where they were arrested.
He said Lawrence, upon seeing the security man quickly fled the scene in their company’s vehicle, leaving William behind to be arrested. He added that Lawrence however returned to the scene with only six out of the ten jerry cans filled with the oil and was apprehended with the assistance of the Kent house security patrol team which was earlier alerted by the Security man.
The commander noted that the two suspects admitted to the offence in their statement to the Police, adding that they would both be arraigned after investigations are concluded.
He cautioned communication companies to be mindful of such miscreants.
