The story of a 14-year old girl, defiled by five men who later abused her physically and dumped her in a stream at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region, has been attracting support from the public.

The girl is battling complications and psychological trauma.

Some philanthropists have been coming through to her with cash donations and offers of counseling.

Two individuals have made cash donations -- GHC2,000 and $500 -- while another individual donated sanitary pads.

Others have also presented food items to the victim.

Part of the donation is expected to cover treatment and other medical expenses for the victim.

Two Accra-based philanthropists Dickson Antwi and Yvone Boatemaa say they were touched by the plight of the girl after the story aired on the Multimedia Group platforms.

Mr. Antwi, who donated $500 commended the Multimedia Group for highlighting the plight of the girl and other social issues in the country.

“We were touched on that very morning when we heard the story about some criminals or suspects who attacked, defiled an innocent 14-year old girl; sexually assaulted her and even attempted to kill her and subsequently her into a stream. I believe that as members of one community, we have a responsibility towards each other and so whenever and wherever it is possible for us to be of help to each other, we should so do,” he said.

He also praised the Nkawkaw police for the attention they have given to the case.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank the police and also the Multimedia Group for the work done so far. Since our arrival, we have heard the efforts that the police have made and continued to make to bring all the suspects to justice. I think it is worth commending the police particularly what we have seen here in Nkawkaw. Same goes to Multimedia Group. I think that these social issues, if you continue to highlight them; issues that impact on our life as Ghanaians-economically, socially and culturally, it will all the better for our country”.

Nkawkaw Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Sarfo Peprah received the donation on behalf of the victim.

He believes the gesture will encourage more sexual abuse victims to report cases to the police.

A group of US-based sailors donated the GHC2,000 towards the girl’s medical examination.

Petty Officer Second Class Andrews Nyantakyi who is the leader of the group is hopeful the victim will receive the best of medical care.

The donation will enable the girl to receive specialist medical care.
