A couple has been arrested by the police in Sefwi-Wiawso in the Western Region for an alleged incest and criminal abortion.
The husband, John Apedo, is alleged to have impregnated his stepdaughter, a junior high school student, while his wife, Agnes Gyemfuah, who is also mother of the girl, is in the grips of the law for allegedly aborting the pregnancy.
According to the police, Gyamfuah could not come to terms with the fact that her own daughter had decided to warm her husband’s bed and that their nefarious activities had led to a pregnancy and so she decided to terminate it.
She, therefore, took her daughter to a nearby clinic and had the foetus aborted, but other family members who were alarmed by the behaviour of Gyamfuah alerted the police, who caused her arrest.
The police said further investigations into the case would be conducted to enable them to arrest individuals in the clinic who performed the illegal abortion.
The police source said the girl lived with her mother and stepfather, and that any time the mother left home, Apedo engaged in sexual intercourse with her after which he warned her not to disclose the secret to anyone.
The girl, however, became pregnant and when her mother discovered it, she said she could not bear the sight of her daughter carrying her husband’s baby, hence the abortion.
