Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), the union body for musicians in Ghana will have a new president by close of day Thursday. Members of musicians’ body are currently in Tamale in congress to deliberate on the union’s activities and welfare over the years, strategise for the future and to elect new executives to man its affairs for the next four years. About 150 delegates from all the regions of the country are participating in the congress and 139 of that number are eligible to vote in the elections. Top on Thursday’s elections at the Radath Memorial Centre in Tamale is the MUSIGA presidency and four main candidates, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Nana Tuffour, Bice Osei Kuffour and Willie Roi, are in contention as to who deserves to man the affairs of MUSIGA. The four, all musicians, have over the months embarked on massive campaign tours to canvass votes for their bid. Of the four, the contest according to many is a two horse race between the ‘old’ Gyedu Blay Ambolley and the ‘young’ Bice Osei Kuffour popularly known as Obour. This will however not be new to the Simigwa Do Man, Ambolley, who has once served as the union’s vice president and believes that he is better placed to change the course of musicians for a better one. Among his plans, the man who said he invented rap music said he implement a decentralised system bringing on board all musicians across the country to create a unified body. This he said will enhance development of the Ghanaian music industry. Obour, the youngest among the candidates, who according to reports was persuaded to relinquish his presidential ambition for the ‘more matured’ candidates to run the union, has promised a total revamp of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) to the benefit of its members when elected as the union's president. Obour who is widely tipped to win the elections believes that, “MUSIGA should be able to change the lives of musicians.” stating that he will re-brand the union to look more attractive and to bring on board all musicians who have not had a reason to join the union. MUSIGA has contracted the Electoral Commission (EC) to supervise the elections promising that the elections will be free and fair.
