News reaching Myjoyonline.com is that hiplife musician Bice Osei Kuffour popularly known as Obour, has been elected new President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA). He beat three others, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Nana Tuffour and Willie Roi after Thursday’s elections at the on-going MUSIGA congress at the Radath Memorial Centre in Tamale. At the close of counting of ballots, Obour polled 64 votes while Nana Tuffour had 51 votes, Ambolley 24 and Willie Roi 2. Kaakyire Kwame Appiah beat incumbent Amandzeba Nat Brew to become 1st Vice President. Other winners include, Bessa Simons 2nd Vice President; Deborah Freeman, General Secretary; Reggae artiste Chizzy Wailer as Organiser. This will not be the first time Obour will be serving as an executive member of the union. He was the immediate past National Youth Organiser championing the affairs of the ‘youth’ in the music. Obour did state in an earlier interview with Myjoyonline.com that “MUSIGA should be able to change the lives of musicians” adding he will re-brand the union to look more attractive and to bring on board all musicians who have not had a reason to join the union. Obour staged his campaign on the motto: AJUMAPA (a good work), explaining that AJUMAPA stood for Accountable administration; Jobs for musicians; Unity of union members; Music and music business education; Aging musicians welfare; Pushing for policies and Achieving our goals. This talented chap shot into musical prominence with his smash hit, Atentenben which scooped three awards at the 2002 Ghana Music Awards. That propelled the career of this musical daredevil releasing his second hit Nana Obour off his Dondo album. Other richly brewed tunes on that album included Palm Wine, the ‘Judgment Day’ tune Mesoodae. Interestingly, the video of Nana Obour won Best Video at the 2003 Ghana Music Awards. He has since released several works including, the controversial Konkotiba and The Game. Obour has successfully executed several humanitarian campaigns including one on road safety, and was recently appointed National Tuberculosis Ambassador and is looking to bring these successes chalked to bear on his administration.
