President of Ghana Athletics, Prof. Francis Dodoo says he is impressed with the performances produced by the young athletes in the national team at the ongoing All Africa Games.
The athletics contingent failed to better the seven medals won at the last edition four years ago after managing five medals in Maputo. The team could only haul one gold and four silver medals at the Games.
Professor Dodoo, an ex-Olympian, believes there are some positives despite the athletics team’s unimproved display at the Games.
He told JOY Sports, “I was happy with how the young athletes did. Coming into the competition, anybody who I opened up to, I think I told them that we had a number of athletes who were ranked in the fourth, fifth, sixth regions, so I think they ran to form. The young athletes did what they were supposed to do.”
He added, “If you look at the selection that we did, everybody either got a medal or got into the final. And so, I am really impressed with their competitiveness and I think two years from now our athletes will make Ghana proud.”
Meanwhile, Ghana could haul two more gold medals at the All Africa Games if the men’s and women’s national football teams defeat their opponents in the grande finale this weekend.
The Black Meteors battle South Africa in the men’s final while the Black Princesses take on Cameroon in the women’s finale. Team Ghana is placed 13th on the medal table with a total of 13 medals, 3 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze.
