Kinkaway Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of Kinkaway Mining Ghana Limited, a mining firm operating in the Wassa Amenfi West District, has presented educational materials and sponsorship package to 46 students in Hiawa, a farming community in its operational area at a cost of GHS10, 000.
The gesture aims at helping needy but brilliant students who drop out of school to go into illegal small scale mining (galamsey), often due to lack of parental support.
The Foundation presented classroom furniture worth about GHS5,000 to abolish the system where pupils of the Hiawa Catholic Basic School carry chairs from their homes or risk sitting on the bare floor to access basic education.
In its quest to improve education and help the community raise higher academic achievers, the Kinkaway Foundation has instituted two Scholarship schemes which will benefit children from Kindergarten to Senior High School level.
Against this backdrop, four students entering senior high Schools received sponsorship packages, whilst 42 people drawn from three primary and Junior High Schools, received school bags and other educational materials.
The beneficiary schools are Sagomens, a private Junior High School in Hiawa, the Hiawa Catholic Basic School and Wassa Bekwai Catholic JHS.
The President of Kinkaway Foundation, Geoffrey Nunoo says the Foundation’s ultimate goal is to reduce the high numbers of school children involved in illegal mining (Galamsey) activities at the expense of their education.
Mr. Nunoo said Kinkaway Foundation would continue to support the community in the areas of health, education and economic empowerment so they can become self-reliant.
He was optimistic that the donations and the scholarship package will improve the standard of education in the community.
The Kinkaway Foundation, which is an arm of the Kinkaway Mining Ghana Limited, is an NGO with the sole aim to address challenges in mining communities in the Western Region and other parts of the country.
The President, Geoffrey Nunoo, says they hope to involve other mining companies in the future to extend support to more communities.
Kinkaway focuses on education, health and infrastructural development.
