The rector of the Ho Polytechnic, Dr. J. Y.K Afun, says the institution was currently facing inadequate infrastructure problems that are affecting intake into the school.
He has, therefore, called for government intervention to reverse the trend to help train more of the youth in the various disciplines at the polytechnic.
Dr. Afun disclosed that the Ho Polytechnic did not have adequate classroom blocks and furniture, which was militating against the growth of the institution.
The Rect6r was speaking at the 19th Matriculation ceremony of the polytechnic in Ho over the weekend.
Dr. Afun said 3,060 applications were received, out of which 230 qualified, but due to inadequate infrastructure such as classrooms, only 1,930 were admitted, representing 37 percent of the total number of students admitted, and that out of the number, only 4 percent were female.
He also blamed the students partly for the furniture problem confronting the polytechnic, because some of the students usually take furniture into their hostels, and never bring them to the classrooms, stressing that the Polytechnic administration had formed a special task force to visit all hostels and retrieve school furniture in the custody of students.
Touching on the poor enrolment of females in technical institutions to offer mathematics and science related subjects; the Rector stressed the need to make the teaching of mathematics and science more attractive, to help demystify the notion that mathematics and science related courses were the preserve of men.
He cautioned the students to be mindful of the matriculation oath they had taken, and ensure that they observe the rules and regulations governing the institution, noting that the Polytechnic would not compromise on discipline.
Dr. Afun said in recent times, some of the students had been stealing the handbags of lecturers, and warned that his outfit would not spare anyone caught in the act.
He said the school authorities would not hesitate to apply disciplinary measures, or hand over students involved in criminal activities to the law enforcement agencies.
The Rector also warned the students not to involve themselves in homosexual acts whilst on campus.
“Please, please, I advise you not to think about attacking each other from behind, why you would leave all the beautiful ladies and decide to engage in what society does not like. It is inhuman, so there are no human rights about that negative practice,” he stressed.
