The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO says it is progressing steadily in its bid to unravel the mystery surrounding the payment of judgment debts to Mr Alfred Woyome and other persons.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, a Deputy Executive Director of EOCO, Mr Charles N ii Adama Akrong, said although some officials of the past government had declined to appear before it, technocrats from the relevant government ministries were appearing before it and providing very vital documents which were leading EOCO to some answers.
He said those individuals who had instituted court action had the right to do so.
He said although EOCO had some powers it could invoke, it would rather argue its case in court.
“We will have our day in court,” he said, adding, “We must be seen to be obeying the law.”
On statements made by some members of the public to the effect that EOCO would fail to indict the Attorney-General in its findings because it was under that office, Mr Akrong said EOCO was operationally independent.
“The Attorney-General does not control us operationally. Under the new law, we are a body corporate which can sue and be sued,” he said.
He said EOCO routed its financial needs through the Attorney-General's Office to the Ministry of Finance and that was the relationship between the two.
According to him, the public appeared to have confused the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) with EOCO, saying the powers of the two were not the same.
Mr Akrong said EOCO would certainly do a good job.
Asked whether a former Attorney-General, Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu, had appeared before the office yet, he replied in the negative, saying she had been scheduled to appear this week but due to some unforeseen circumstances, the date had to be changed.
As of 7:00p.m. last Thursday, top officials of EOCO were still on the office premises preparing to interview another batch of public officials.
