President Akufo-Addo has appointed Kwame Sowu as the Chairman for the governing body of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB). He replaces Fritz Baffour.
The President made the appointment in consultation with the Council of State in line with the National Museum Act, 1969 (NLCD 387) according to a letter dated 23rd October, 2017 and signed by the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare.
The board is expected to be sworn into office sometime in the second week of November to advance the mission of the GMMB established in 1957 as the legal custodian of Ghana’s material cultural heritage (movable and immovable).
Background
Kwame Sowu brings on board, a deep interest and wealth of experience in the tourism sector expected to play out in his new role to the country’s economic benefits.
He was a member of the transition team for the Akufo Addo government on tourism. He was also a key member of the New Patriotic Party’s 2016 Manifesto subcommittee on Tourism and Creative Arts – making significant contributions including the submission of a policy proposal for the viability of Ghana's Museums and Monuments.
Kwame studied MSC, Project Management at Salford University, UK. He also studied Public Relations, Marketing & Advertising at the Ghana Institute of Journalism. He is thus expected to bring such a wide-ranging background to bear in pushing the agenda to transform the country’s museum management to the benefit of the economy.
Public Service
Kwame has also demonstrated his passion for public service, performance efficiency. In 2006 for instance, he submitted at the request of the then Minister for Finance, a five-point proposal including the popular “Communication Service Tax” for the 2007 Annual Budget and Financial Statement of the Kufuor administration.
In 2010, Kwame was acknowledged for his contributions to the annual budget statement and economic policy of the Government of Ghana.
Private Engagements
Kwame is presently the Founder and Managing Director of Energy Synergies Limited, suppliers of electromechanical goods and services to the power, mining, industrial, and oil & gas sectors. He had previously worked with Tropical Cable and Conductor as Marketing Manager and Accra Brewery Ltd., where he was Sales Manager for Prestige Outlets.
