Ghana has for the second time been chosen to host the Susan G. Komen race for the cure of breast cancer. The race is the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer and started in 1983 – it has grown from one race with 800 people in Dallas USA to a global series of more than 140 race involving over 1.6 miilion participants on four continents. The race is expected to come off in Kumasi on May 25 this year, to coincide with the Africa Union Day celebration. Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addae, President of Breast Care International, local organizers of the event said Ghana is ranked 10th among countries with high prevalence of breast cancer. According to her, one woman dies from breast cancer every 69 seconds globally while in Ghana over 2,000 women were diagnosed with the disease in 2011. She blamed late reporting of the disease by affected women for the many deaths associated with the disease. The race, which is expected to attract over 20,000 volunteers, will involve a walk through some principal streets of Kumasi and later converge at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium where medical professionals and opinion leaders will address the gathering. Survivors of breast cancer will also tell their stories to the participants. Dr. Wiafe Addae who is also the Managing Director of Peace and Love Clinic is appealing for financial and material support to ensure a successful programme. History has it that one Nancy Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen in 1982 that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer. Today, the Komen race for the cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives.
