The Electoral Commission has detected massive multiple registration in the ongoing biometric voter registration exercise.
Figures released by the EC shows that the incident was most prevalent in the Ashanti region which happens to be the stronghold of the New Patriotic Party.
As at Monday, 30th April, a total of 424 individuals have registered more than once in the region. The Brong Ahafo Region is second on the list with 411 multiple registrations.
The number of multiple registration recorded in the Volta region amounted to 326 whereas that in the greater Accra region accounted for 335 cases.
The breakdown of the cases is as follows; Eastern region, 254; Central region, 318; Greater Accra, 335; Western region, 225; Upper East, 162; Upper West, 120; Northern region, 289; Volta, 326; Ashanti region,424; and Brong Ahafo region, 411.
In an interview with Joy FM, Christian Owusu Parry, Acting Director of Public Affairs of the EC revealed that per the biometric process, they traced the names of everyone who has indulged in the malpractice and will investigate each matter separately.
He said an adjudicating committee is looking at the merit of each case, and those found to have knowingly indulged in the act will have their names struck out of the voters register, and handed over to the police whereas those whose names were accidentally duplicated will be pardoned.
The National Co-ordinator for the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers, John Larvie who also spoke to Joy FM said that these figures might be due to low voter education.
He however did not rule out politicians being behind some of these cases of multiple registration. According to him, the law must take its course and those found culpable must be dealt with.
