A mother and her three-month-old baby boy lost their lives when a mahogany tree fell on their house during Friday’s early morning rain storm.
A third person who was also involved in the accident was seriously wounded.
Narrating the incident to the Joy News Television crew the assemblyman for the area, Henry Ayittey said, he had a call at about 4am from a resident informing him of the accident.
Upon receiving the news, he immediately informed the Police, Fire service and NADMO, who responded swiftly to the distress call.
The injured person, whose name was given as Michael Aidoo, was rushed to the Achimota hospital by neighbours before the rescue team arrived on the scene.
Owners of the affected shops and houses were seen retrieving what was left of their belongings from the debris.
When the news team rushed to the Achimota hospital where he was receiving treatment, Michael Aidoo had already been treated and discharged.
Attempts made to rescue the mother and the baby according to the rescue team, proved futile as they had already passed away.
Their mortal remains have since been deposited at the Police hospital morgue.
NADMO coordinator Mr. Agbesi told Joy News TV, the extent of damage is yet to be ascertained but complaints from some affected person he said, has been forwarded to the National Secretariat.
An agreement was reached in consultation with the Chiefs of Haatso that other big trees in the area near the yam market will be cut down.
