Mrs Emma Amoateng-Mensah, Girl-Child Education Officer for Ashanti Region, has bemoaned the low school enrolment of the girl-child, despite numerous government interventions to boost their education in the country.
She said the various government efforts to encourage more girls to be in school were informed by the crucial role the empowered woman plays in the Nation's Socio-economic development.
Mrs Amoateng-Mensah was not happy about the female drop-out rate, which remains high while only a few also got enrolled.
She made the observation when addressing this year's National Girl-Child Education week held at the weekend at Ejisu in the Ejisu-Juaben District, under the theme "Girls’ Education, a Sustainable Tool for the Nation's Development".
Mrs. Amoateng mentioned some of these interventions as Special Scholarship Scheme for needy girls at all levels of education, the Capitation Grant and Free-Feeding programme, adding that, the celebration of the event yearly is also part of the government's decision to raise public awareness about the interventions.
"The government would however continue to support girl-child education notwithstanding the challenges" she stressed, whiles calling on female teachers and women in high positions to be role models to attract more girls to school.
