No Junior High School (JHS) in the Obuasi municipality recorded zero per cent in this year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Mrs Beatrice Prempeh, Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency at Obuasi, said there was also no school in which all the candidates obtained grade nine for all the subjects. The Municipal Director said in all, the municipality presented 3,721 candidates made up of 1,924 boys and 1,797 girls out of which 23 candidates were absent during the examination with only 77 recording aggregate 31 and above. Mrs Prempeh announced that a total of 2,884 candidates scored aggregate one to five in English while 3,228 obtained aggregate one to five in social studies with 3,528 students also scoring the same grades in mathematics. She said though the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of two schools, analysis of the results of the remaining 67 schools had shown that the overall percentage pass of the municipality stood at 98 per cent. She noted that Obuasi had been first in the BECE for three consecutive years and with a 98 per cent pass, "there was the likelihood of the municipality becoming first again". Mrs Prempeh commended both the head teachers and teachers in private and public basic schools for making the municipality proud. She said her administration would create the enabling environment for them to further improve upon their performance to keep the municipality on a higher educational pedestal. Source: GNA
