The Attorney-General’s Department has revealed it has inadequate State Attorneys in the nation’s capital Accra and the other regions in the country.
Director of Public Prosecution, Yvonne Attakora Obuobisa explained the situation has hampered the delivery of justice across the country.
Speaking to Joy News, she said though Accra has the highest number of State Attorneys compared to the other cities, they are not enough to address the number of cases being referred to the department.
Delving into the other regions, Obuobisa said “In the regional offices right now in the whole Brong Ahafo region, [which] is a big region with so many courts we have just two Attorneys.”
According to her, the Eastern Region has six Attorneys followed by the Northern, and Volta Regions all with three Attorneys.
This is followed by both the Central, and the Upper West Regions having two Attorneys each to themselves.
She explained the situation has come about because most of the people sign up to become a State Attorney only to get the experience after which they leave for a better paying job.
“We have low numbers and we are actually overwhelmed because there are so many cases that we have to advise on,” she bemoaned.
She disclosed the issue has affected the volume of work the department has to work because a docket could be with an Attorney for several months before being acted upon.
