Emeritus Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, has concluded his transformative tenure as Secretary-General of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA).
To honour his exceptional service, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, also Vice-Chair of the ARUA Board, hosted a heartfelt send-off event.
With support from the Director and staff of the Institute for Statistical, Social & Economic Research (ISSER), the occasion also welcomed the new ARUA Secretary-General, Prof. John Gyapong, a former UG Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Development.

This significant event brought together the University of Ghana’s leadership, colleagues, and friends to celebrate a legacy of advancing collaboration and research across ARUA universities.
Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo praised Emeritus Prof. Aryeetey for his outstanding leadership, highlighting his humility and integrity.
She lauded him as "a man of ideas as gigantic as his stature… recognizing difficulties but unfazed by them… a perpetual optimist who focuses on opportunities rather than obstacles."
Presenting a cake to Emeritus Prof. Aryeetey, Prof. Amfo expressed her joy that he had served UG, Ghana, and ARUA with distinction, departing at the height of his career with well-deserved accolades.
She proposed a toast to honour him, wishing him good health and a restful retirement, acknowledging his immense academic contributions.
In a touching telecast message, ARUA Board Chair and Rhodes University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sizwe Mabizela paid tribute to Emeritus Prof. Aryeetey’s personal passion, commitment, and dedication to research excellence on the continent, describing him as a great source of inspiration and an "embodiment of humility, integrity, and selfless service."
Goodwill messages from ARUA network stakeholders echoed these sentiments, celebrating Emeritus Prof. Aryeetey’s legacy and wishing Prof. John Gyapong success in his new role.

Following these messages, Emeritus Prof. Aryeetey was joined by his wife, Prof. (Mrs.) Ellen Bortei-Doku Aryeetey and university leaders cut the cake presented to him.
The evening event, animated by the Immigration Band (Bravo Team), featured heartfelt tributes and presentations from various groups, recognising Emeritus Prof. Aryeetey’s outstanding contributions to ARUA and the academic community.
Emeritus Prof. Ernest Aryeetey’s academic life has been a testament to dedication, leadership, and the nurturing of young change-makers in Africa and beyond.
The entire University community expresses heartfelt gratitude and wishes him a fulfilling and restful retirement, celebrating a legacy that will inspire future generations.
