Recent reports of cholera cases in the Greater Accra region indicate that most of the 122 cases and four deaths recorded were from Chorkor, Korle Gonno and Mamprobi, and in the Ablekuma sub-metro as well as James Town in the Ga Mashie area.
The Environmental Health Officer of the Ablekuma Sub-Metro, Samuel Tettey told Asempa News that they are putting a number of measures in place to curb the rising cases of cholera in the area.
Mr. Tettey said the sub-metro has started a vigorous one-on-one education campaign to get residents clean their environment, eat clean and warm food, desist from defecating at the beaches and in open drains.
“We are now doing one-on-one education,” he said.
The Chairman of the Sub-Metro, Philip Lamptey said due to the outbreak, all the environmental health inspectors have been asked to move into the community and join the education campaign.
He told Asempa News measures were also in place to improve the lifting of refuse in the area, saying “that is also going to help curb the spread of cholera, while those who do not have refuse containers in their homes are being supplied with some.”
Mr. Lamptey, who is also the Assembly Member for Mamprobi Electoral Area said they have started cleaning and disilting the drains.
Meanwhile a visit to the area revealed that residents defecate in the drains and at the beaches even though there were public toilets in the area.
Asempa News reporter Kwaku Antwi-Otoo also discovered vendors sold cooked and fresh food on the culverts and very close to open drains.
Most homes also lack toilet facilities.
Some residents confirmed hearing of reports of cholera but thought it too distant away to affect them.
