The Accra-Nsawam railway line will be re-opened by the end of November, the Ghana Railway Development Authority has assured.
The railway line had been shut down in a while due to rehabilitation and is set to be completed by the end of November.
“We have the Accra-Nsawam line that is about 90% complete,” Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Railway Development Authority, Richard Dombo stated.
He said that the process would have been complete but for the torrential rains that disrupted the processes.
“They had until last week been running not less than about 20 test runs on the Accra-Nsawam line,” he said.
He added that the railway sector is seeing progress as there have been efforts to rehabilitate various rail lines.
Government promised to totally revamp the railway sector in two years. This was to include the Western corridor rail line linking to Ivory Coast.
Speaking to Daniel Dadzie on the Super Morning Show, the CEO associated the collapse of the sector to inadequate funding, leadership mismanagement, and poor maintenance culture among others.
He said, among all factors that contributed to the collapse of the sector, inadequate funding played a major role.
“It’s an elephant in the room, you cannot chase it out.”
According to him, projects have been suspended because of inadequate funds.
He stated that the Transport Ministry, which he described as “gigantic”, receives the same funding in budget allocations as other sectors.
“Let’s say if the Ministry of Transport got an annual budgetary allocation and let’s say as a whole sector, we got 10 million dollars’ equivalent in cedis.
“Should the Ministry of Transport divide the amount among the four gigantic subsets, the railway sector will not have sufficient [funds] to work on its projects,” he added.
He, however, disclosed that more rehabilitation works are ongoing.
