Former head of Policy Monitoring and Evaluation, Dr Tony Aidoo, says the unbridled indiscipline in Africa must stop if the continent is to produce iconic leaders such as the late Nelson Mandela
He said Africa needs to adopt a sense of responsibility and discipline as a core value in order to produce leaders who will rise above sectional and parochial interest and place the national interest first.
“In Africa we don’t have a sense of responsibility; we tend to be very undisciplined people!, he asserted.
According to him, “there is so much indiscipline in this society that I wonder how we are surviving as a human race.”
Dr. Tony Aidoo was speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Monday. He was discussing the leadership qualities of the late former South African president and whether Africa could produce other leaders of Mr. Mandela’s caliber.
Dr. Tony Aidoo, who is currently an Ambassador-designate, said Mr. Mandela was “One of the few Africans who have led their people not because of power but because of the desire to see the nation progress and I think it was very, very, remarkable indeed.”
He described the first Black President of South Africa and Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as “the two great Africans.”
For the continent to produce such great leaders, Dr. Aidoo, said “We need to cultivate that we live by principles; the principle that at no point in time should we put individual interest [above] the interest of the public; the two must be synchronized.”
