An aide of the vice-president John Dramani Mahama has justified the allocation of an office accommodation to the wife of Mr Mahama.
John Gyinapo said the appropriation of a three-bedroom office complex to Mrs Lordina Mahama is “simple because she is entitled to that.”
The vice president’s spokesperson stressed that “the wife of the vice president is not involved in any income-earning activity and she thought that she would support Ghana by embarking on a mission through her NGO.”
Mr Gyinapo told Evans Mensah on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday.
He said the Works and Housing Ministry, after considering Mrs Mahama’s humanitarian urge, “decided to allocate a three-room building to her as an office.”
The report comes amid criticisms that Mr Mahama has himself not had an official state-provided residence for himself. He has been living in his Dworwulu apartment with his family since he took up his new post, reports say.
Whilst Mr Gyinapo condemned what he said has been an unnecessary media hype and “knit-picking” on the allocation, he insists furnishing of the office was borne by Mrs Mahama.
The Daily Searchlight newspaper, edited by Ken Kuranchie, reported that “the bungalow [of Mrs Mahama], located at House Number C2 at Cantonments in Accra, is believed to be one of the residences refurbished at a cost of ¢1.2 billion which went to Parliament recently."
“If we want to do knit-picking, I think that it will not help us in any way. I think that the most important thing is that she is doing a good job; she’s adopted some orphanages and she’s assisting these orphanages. The least we can do is to encourage her to continue to work well,” he said.
“I don’t think that [a two- [or] three-room apartment] would bring this nation to its knees. I think that there are more important issues, there are more salient issues that we can concentrate on.”
