The Akatsi College of Education is developing a 10-year strategic plan to guide the institution to become one of the best training centres for teachers on the African continent.
The 2020-2030 strategic plan would contain key strategies towards enhancing staff capacity, social needs of students, infrastructure, and integrate information communication technology into academic activities.
The Principal, John Seddoh, announced this at the College’s 13th Congregation held on the campus in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region.
“The College is currently working on the strategic plan for the period 2020-2030. It has put in place key strategies to attract, hire and retain highly qualified and experienced academic and support staff to improve upon the capacity of the academic and administrative staff of the college.
"It is also to improve on the academic and social needs of students, improve upon the teaching of science and mathematics/ICT education in the college, expand and improve on the physical facilities/infrastructure, integrate fully ICT into the teaching and learning processes of the College, and initiate quality assurance measures for teacher education”, he said.
He further indicated that “the College, through the help of its hardworking staff, has been able to put together a comprehensive policy document cutting across all aspects of the College’s operations, including academic, leadership and management and general administration.”
“A number of them have already been fully implemented while others are at various levels of implementation. Heads of Departments and Units have been charged to identify and accomplish any three objectives stated in the CIPs, and this will be one of the indicators by which their performance will be evaluated”.
Mr Seddoh, therefore, called for the support of stakeholders towards achieving the desired goals of the 10-year strategic plan.
He acknowledged the Melcom Group of Companies for constructing a five-room self-contained and toilet facility for the College.
In addition, management undertook a beautification project on the campus “to create an attractive and conducive environment for teaching and learning”.
He entreated the government to endeavour to complete the conversion of the old science lab into an ICT lab and also ensure the contractor working on the female hostel returns to the site to complete the project.
“Should the Contractor not be able to return to the site by the end of this year, we would have no option than to request the Consultant to abrogate the Contract and rearward to another Contractor”, he warned.
He underscored the urgent need for an auditorium, 20–unit lecture halls and offices, administration block, and principal's residence. He thus appealed to government to approve the above projects request special allocation from GETFund.
The Principal of Accra College of Education, Dr Samuel Awinkene Atintonu, the Guest of Honour, entreated teachers to ensure they abide by the profession's ethics.
868 students from the 2018/19 and 2019/20 academic years were conferred with Diploma in Basic Education.
35 of the graduates had First Class, 439 had Second Class Upper, 299 had Second Class Lower, 79 had Third Class, while 79 had Pass.
