Akatsi North district, one of the newly created districts has been feeding about 3000 pupils across the district under a locally funded initiative to augment government's school feeding program.
This according to the District Chief Executive, James Gunu forms part of innovative programs to improve enrollment in schools and enhance the economic fortunes of the inhabitants who are mostly farmers and small scale traders.
Out of about 30 basic schools in the district, 12 schools are benefiting from the central government’s school feeding program.
The District Assembly has taken up the school meals of additional 10 schools in its own school feeding program which targeted about 3,000 school children.
The DCE made the revelation at a durbar to climax the Assembly’s four year anniversary under the theme , “Akatsi North District – Four years of Transformation in the Context of Decentralisation and Innovative Leadership.”
The anniversary sought to, among other things, showcase the achievements of the district within its four years of existence and also evaluate the activities of the Assembly aimed at improving the livelihood of inhabitants.
According to the DCE, the creation of the assembly did not only bring governance closer to the people but also, ensure accelerated development in the area.

Citing some of the achievements, he mentioned the construction of a six semi-detached staff bungalows, a 3-bedroom self-contain for the District Director, A fire Station, 27-room District Assembly hall complex , a 40-room three-storey shopping center, classroom blocks and Health Centres in some communities, the assembly also introduced the district level public accountability forum, a local Economic Development Fund, interventions for persons with disabilities in the district and established Girl Child Education Clubs to enhance the education of females in the district.
According to James Gunu, the Assembly has soils and climate that are good for the cultivation of all kinds of food and cash crops and in terms of tourism, the district has a crocodile pond at Ave –Dakpa , a unique palm tree with seven stems and the famous traditional shrine called Amesikpe.
The Assembly, he said has adopted a development strategy called “Triple Jump” which is hinged on the NDC’s better agenda.
The Assembly was carved out of the erstwhile Akatsi District under Legislative Instrument 2161 in March 2012, and was inaugurated in June the same year.
The program was well attended by the ministers, MPs, traditional leaders all in the Volta region.
The Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Francis Ganyaglo in his speech commended the staff of the assembly and the traditional leaders for their dedication and commitment to the progress of the of the district.
