The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akatsi South, Hon. Daniel Dagba, has led a vigorous clean-up operation at the Akatsi Market in a bold effort to restore hygiene, promote public health, and revitalise the municipality’s economic hub.

The operation, which tackled years of accumulated waste and overgrown vegetation, marked a turning point for the market, which had long suffered from neglect. The initiative brought together key stakeholders, including Torgbui Azadagli III, Chief of Tatorme and Government Appointee to the Assembly, the Municipal Finance Officer, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Municipal Engineers, Miss Loretta Senoo, and a dedicated team from the Akatsi South Municipal Assembly.

Beginning at dawn, teams mobilised waste collection trucks, sanitation tools, and manpower to clear heaps of refuse and debris from the market’s premises. The clean-up is part of a renewed commitment by the Assembly to enhance environmental cleanliness, improve safety, and restore dignity for both traders and patrons.

Speaking to journalists, Hon. Dagba highlighted the vital role of the market in the local economy and stressed the importance of maintaining hygienic trading conditions.

“This market is the heartbeat of our local economy. It is unacceptable for our mothers and sisters to work in unsanitary conditions. Today’s exercise marks a turning point—our pledge to make the market a clean and safe place for everyone,” he said.

The effort was warmly received by market women and residents, many of whom expressed relief and gratitude, describing the clean-up as long overdue.

Hon. Dagba further assured that this would not be a one-time exercise. The Assembly, he said, is instituting a routine sanitation schedule and will rigorously enforce environmental bylaws to ensure lasting change.

He also called on residents, traders, and all stakeholders to support the Assembly’s vision by practising responsible waste disposal and participating in future communal clean-up exercises.
