The Obetsebi Lamptey interchange is opened to traffic following the commissioning of the first phase.
The $17 million project is expected to significantly reduce traffic and congestion on the stretch which records 60,000 vehicular movements daily.
Also the perennial flooding during rains in the area is expected to be dealt with the construction of storm drains.
Commissioning the interchange President Akufo-Addo who is on a two-day tour of the capital said government by this act has demonstrated its commitment to address congestion in the country.
He further indicated that government is undertaking critical roads project to improve urban mobility.
"Completing of Phase One will make the contractor, Queiroz Galvao to begin work on Phase Two immediately after this commissioning ceremony.
"Today's event is further testimony of government's determination to address traffic issues," he said.
President Akufo-Addo also said government is considering various proposals to address the traffic congestion on the Kaneshie- Mallam stretch.
He then commended the contractor for completing the project five months ahead of schedule saying, “We congratulate the contractor for this admirable worth-work and we hope it will characterise the rest of their performance of this contract.”
The Obetsebi-Lamptey Circle is a major roundabout that links Kaneshie to Accra through Graphic Road; Kaneshie to the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, and then Kaneshie to the spare-parts hub of Abossey Okai.
The contract for the design and the construction of the interchange and other ancillary works was signed in October 2016.
Meanwhile, the Roads Minister, Kwasi Amoako Atta warned contractors that government will not tolerate shoddy works.
He then assured the citizenry that five similar interchanges in different parts of the country.
