The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, has issued a stern warning against the establishment of unauthorized structures around the newly inaugurated Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange.
Speaking at the commissioning of Phase II of the interchange on Friday, November 29, the minister cautioned residents and business operators to refrain from setting up kiosks, wooden shops, or mechanic workshops in the area.
He stressed that maintaining the interchange's functionality and aesthetics is crucial to the city’s urban development goals.
Titus Glover’s directive aligns with his ongoing campaign to prevent informal businesses from invading newly completed infrastructure. Recalling his recent experience at the Flower Pot Interchange in Accra, the minister highlighted the disobedience of two street vendors who ignored his directive and set up stalls under the flyover.
“Last week Tuesday, during the commissioning of the Flower Pot Interchange, I stated clearly that we don’t want any kiosks or mechanics near the interchange,” he said.
“Yet, shortly after, a coconut seller and a banana seller tested my directive. Let us not repeat this here. Let us preserve the ambience and beauty of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange.”
The Regional Minister further appealed to residents to support the government's efforts to improve Accra’s infrastructure and maintain its visual beauty.
City authorities have faced challenges in protecting public spaces from getting overcrowded, with many residents citing limited designated areas for informal businesses. However, the Regional Minister insists that the government’s investments in infrastructure must not be undermined by unregulated activities.
