Political Scientist, Richard Amoako-Baah says NPP flagbearer hopefuls, Alan Kyerematen and two others should look at the results of Sunday's Super Delegates’ Conference and consider throwing in the towel.

According to him, the former Trade Minister and the other two must face reality after polling a combined figure of less than 20 per cent of the 740 valid votes cast companred to the 598 votes, representing 80.78% obtained by Nana Akufo-Addo.  

The opposition party on Sunday held the conference across the country, where 740 special delegates voted in the elections to cut down the number of aspirants from seven to five, ahead of the main contest slated for October 18.

Apart from the two frontrunners Nana Akufo-Addo and Alan Kyerematen (who polled 59 votes, 2.78 per cent), the others were former second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Ghartey (22 votes), former Minister of State, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku (10 votes), former Information Minister, Stephen Asamoah Boateng (13 votes), MPs, Kofi Osei Ameyaw (17 votes) and Francis Addai Nimoh (22 votes).

Two former Ministers- Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku and Stephen Asamoah Boateng- who earned the least votes (10 and 13 respectively), dropped out of the race.

Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Ghartey, despite making it to the top five, on Monday announced on Adom FM that he was withdrawing the race. Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Kofi Osei Ameyaw on Sunday told Joy FM he was considering the decision to step down but would first need to consult his team members.

Speaking on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, however, Prof. Amoako-Baah said it is in the interest of Mr. Alan Kyerematen and the others to withdraw from the race and offer their support to Nana Akufo-Addo.

“Look at the numbers and advise yourself,” the Head of Political Science Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology stated.

He added: “Don’t say all sort of things when you have the figures in front of you”.

“When you are in a race and youv've come close to the very end of it, drop out and support somebody.”

Conspiracy against Alan?

Meanwhile, Nana Ohene Ntow, Spokesperson for Mr. Kyerematen suspects calls for his candidate to pull out of the race even before Sunday’s conference, confirm the long held belief of a political machination against Alan.

“Even before the contest there were all sorts of campaigns for Alan to withdraw his candidature…it gives it a bit of the flavour of conspiracy,” Ohene Ntow remarked.

The former NPP General Secretary also criticized Nana Akufo-Addo for jumping ahead of himself, by announcing that he was shifting attention to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

To him, the process is not yet complete and moreso, the party needs to reorganize and put its house in order, to present a united front to recapture power in the 2016 election.

“In order not to put the cart before the horse we need to put our house in order…let us not pretend that it’s not a major issue…There are cracks in the party and needed to be addressed first for us to present a unified front to capture power.

“It is enough to recognize that once everybody from top to bottom is concerned about this matter then it means it is an issue worth looking at,” he said.
