Aspiring presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Mr Alan Kyerematen, has toured some flooded areas in the Accra metropolis after heavy rains on Thursday.
After touring parts of Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Kaneshie and Kaprice, which were heavily hit by the floods, he said perennial flooding in the country’s capital city needs to looked at more seriously.
Alan Kyerematen expressed utmost shock that although the same parts of the city get flooded when the rains set in, the country has not been able to find a solution to what has become a major problem.
Heavy rains Thursday dawn continued till evening in Accra making majority of the roads in the capital inaccessible.
There was heavy traffic as distressed commuters had to battle with chest-deep flood waters.
Several properties were also destroyed by the floods.
After the tour of the affected areas, Mr Kyerematen said that the continuous use of polythene products for packaging products and its poor disposal has been a significant contributor to Accra’s flooding.

He said these materials when disposed improperly choke gutters and impede the free flow of water.
He advised that a proper mechanism be put in place by the city officials and the refuse collection companies to help salvage the situation by being punctual at their collection schedules.
He also suggested that wire baskets or other refuse bins be dedicated to such plastic waste materials to facilitate proper disposal.
Alan Kyerematen also expressed disappointment in the ruling National Democratic Congress government for not constructing an efficient drainage system since it came to power.
He mentioned that former President Kufuor constructed an efficient drainage system in Alajo, a suburb of Accra, which used to be a flood prone area.
